How buying a gun in Las Cruces works
Pick an FFL dealer near you that accepts shipped transfers and name it at checkout. We confirm their license and ship the firearm to them. Ammunition, optics and parts ship straight to your door where New Mexico law allows.
New Mexico has no purchase permit or registry. Dealer sales run on ATF Form 4473 and the federal NICS check, and most private sales must also go through a dealer. A 2024 state law sets a seven-day waiting period before handover, with exemptions such as concealed handgun license holders; the law has been challenged in federal court, so ask your dealer whether it is enforced when you order. Rifles transfer at 18 and revolvers at 21.

Carrying a gun in Doña Ana County
Adults who may legally own a firearm can openly carry a handgun in most of New Mexico, and a loaded handgun may be carried in a vehicle without a license. Concealed carry on foot needs a concealed handgun license from the New Mexico Department of Public Safety, not the Doña Ana County Sheriff. Applicants must be 21, live in New Mexico and complete an approved training course. Schools, courthouses, bars and tribal land carry their own restrictions.
Hunting near Las Cruces
New Mexico manages big game by Game Management Unit and hunt code, and most deer, elk, pronghorn and oryx licenses come through the spring draw run by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. Rifle deer hunts typically fall in October and November, with exact dates per hunt code in the 2026-27 rules booklet. Big-game rifles must be centerfire and fire expanding bullets. Read the current rules for your unit.
Las Cruces is surrounded by BLM desert units with mule deer in the Organ and Potrillo country. Licenses come through the New Mexico draw by hunt code.
The Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument and wide BLM ground make desert hunting and shooting easy to reach. The Butterfield range west of town is a public facility for rifle, pistol and shotgun.
