Not every deer rifle needs a famous name on the receiver. GForce Arms sells its GFA lever action in .30-30 Winchester at a price below the big brands.

The .30-30 is the standard thicket cartridge for whitetail. Ammunition is easy to find, recoil is mild and shots are usually under a hundred yards. A lever gun in .30-30 is a rifle that many people already know how to use.

For a hunter on a budget, a rifle like this makes sense. It will serve as a spare deer rifle, a truck gun or a first rifle for a young hunter. Test fire it and sight it in before the season, as you would with any rifle, and run a few boxes of different ammunition through it to see what it likes.

The price is moderate, below premium lever guns. That's the draw. Take a few minutes at the dealer counter to handle it, work the action and check how it fits your shoulder or hand before you leave.

The listing says new. It ships to your FFL dealer, where the background check takes place.
