The Springfield Trapdoor armed the US Army after the Civil War, and the cavalry carbine was the short version for troops on horseback. Cimarron's reproduction is chambered in .45-70 Government and has a blue and black finish.

A trapdoor is a single shot rifle. You lift the breech block like a hatch, load a cartridge and close it. It is slow and deliberate, but it is a big bore cartridge with a long record. Hunters have used the .45-70 on deer, elk and bear.

This carbine is more of a collector's piece and a shooter for history fans than a field rifle for most people. It makes a fine display on a wall and a good time at the range with the right loads. Choose ammunition that suits a reproduction rifle and follow the maker's guidance.

The price is high. The listing is new. It ships to your FFL dealer for the background check. Treat it with respect, keep it clean, and if you buy it for the range, plan to shoot slowly and enjoy each round.
