If you want a lever gun that shoots the same cartridge as a lot of bolt rifles, the BLR is the one. This Lightweight PG model is chambered in .308 Winchester and the name points to a pistol grip, wood stock and stainless steel. The detachable magazine feeds the sharp bullets that deer hunters like.

The .308 is a deer cartridge with a long record. Ammunition is easy to find and it is available in many bullet weights. Stainless steel is nice for wet seasons, since it holds up better against rain and sweat. Wood adds warmth and a little more weight to the rifle.

A lever rifle that drops a magazine feels different from a tube gun. You can carry spare magazines in your pocket and load quickly. In thick woods the short lever stroke lets you work the action from the shoulder.

Sight it in at 100 yards and learn your drop at longer distance. Whitetail and hogs fall to it well.
